Your WhatsApp Link Isn’t Working — Here’s How to Actually Fix It
A WhatsApp click-to-chat link either opens a chat or it doesn’t. There’s no “partially working” state, which is actually useful for troubleshooting — it means the problem is almost always one of a small, predictable set of formatting mistakes. Here’s the full list, in the order worth checking.
1. A Leading Plus Sign or Zero
2. Spaces, Dashes, or Brackets in the Number
Copy-pasting a number straight from a business card or email signature (+91 98765-43210 or (91) 9876543210) brings formatting characters with it. Strip everything down to plain digits: 919876543210.
3. Unencoded Spaces in the Message Text
The text parameter needs URL encoding. A raw space breaks the parameter chain, sometimes silently truncating your message or breaking the link entirely. Replace spaces with %20 or +, and run the full message through a URL encoder if it contains punctuation.
4. A Missing ? Before Parameters
5. Using send Without phone=
The api.whatsapp.com/send format requires the phone= key explicitly. Some quick copy-paste jobs drop the key and leave only the number, which the link doesn’t recognize.
6. Mixing Up wa.me and api.whatsapp.com Syntax
These two formats use different structures — wa.me/[number] has no phone= key at all, while api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=[number] requires it. Combining the two (wa.me/phone=919876543210) produces a dead link.
7. An Outdated or Deactivated Number
Sometimes the link is technically perfect and the number behind it has simply changed. If everything above checks out and the link still won’t open a chat, confirm the number is active on WhatsApp Business and hasn’t been swapped without updating every page that references it.
The Fast Way to Check
Paste the URL into a browser address bar on both desktop and mobile before publishing it anywhere — desktop WhatsApp Web behaves slightly differently from the mobile app redirect, and catching a problem before a campaign goes live is a lot cheaper than catching it after.
When It’s Worth Auditing Every Link at Once
A single broken link is a quick fix. A site with WhatsApp buttons scattered across dozens of pages, built at different times by different people, tends to accumulate exactly the mistakes above — quietly costing leads nobody’s tracking. Running a full link audit across a client’s site, ad landing pages, and social bios is a standard part of the technical checks we do at Maya Digital Desk before a WhatsApp-driven campaign launches. If you’re not sure how many of your own links still work, that’s worth finding out before your next round of ad spend, not after.
