Every WhatsApp Link Parameter, Explained Properly
Before the parameters — one quick correction that saves everyone a headache. What most people call a “WhatsApp Business API URL” is not the API. It’s a click-to-chat link: a plain URL, no authentication, no developer account, nothing to configure on Meta’s end. The actual WhatsApp Business Platform API is a separate, paid, developer-level product used for automated messaging at scale through approved providers. If you’re building a link for a website button or a bio link, you want the click-to-chat format below — much simpler, and free.
The Two Link Formats
https://wa.me/[countrycode][number]?text=[message]
https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=[countrycode][number]&text=[message]Both work identically in every browser and on every device. wa.me is shorter and slightly more common in newer implementations; api.whatsapp.com/send is the older, still fully supported format. Neither is more “official” than the other.
The Parameters, One at a Time
phone / the number in wa.me — Always the full number in international format: country code first, no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces, dashes, or brackets. 919876543210 is correct. +91-98765-43210 will break the link or send it to the wrong recipient.
text — The pre-filled message that loads into the chat box when someone opens the link. This needs to be URL-encoded: spaces become %20 or +, and punctuation like question marks or ampersands need their own encoded equivalents. Most link generators handle this automatically, but if you’re building URLs by hand, don’t skip it.
app_absent (less common) — Occasionally seen appended to older-format links, used to control fallback behavior if WhatsApp isn’t installed on the visitor’s device. Most modern implementations don’t need to set this manually; the default behavior (prompting a WhatsApp Web or app-store redirect) covers nearly every case.
A Working Example
https://wa.me/971501234567?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20to%20know%20more%20about%20your%20servicesThis opens a chat with the UAE number listed, pre-filled with “Hi, I’d like to know more about your services” — properly encoded, ready to send.
Adding Tracking Without Breaking the Link
If you want to know which channel drove the click later, don’t rely on the WhatsApp parameters for that — append UTM parameters to the page the button lives on instead, and pass a short campaign code inside the text parameter itself (e.g., “Hi, saw your IG post about…”). That way your team can see the source right inside the chat, and your analytics setup (GA4 via Google Tag Manager) captures the click event separately, without any risk of a malformed parameter breaking the link itself.
Getting This Right at Scale
One link is easy to get right by hand. Fifty landing pages across multiple campaigns, countries, and WhatsApp numbers is where formatting errors quietly creep in — a missing country code here, an unencoded space there — and every broken link is a lead that never reaches you. Building and auditing click-to-chat links correctly across a client’s entire site and ad ecosystem is standard practice in the WhatsApp automation work we do at Maya Digital Desk. If you’re managing more than a handful of these links, it’s worth having them checked before your next campaign push rather than after.
