How to See WhatsApp Clicks — Spoiler: Not Inside Search Console
Let’s save you some scrolling through menus that don’t have what you’re looking for. There is no tab, filter, or hidden report in Google Search Console that shows WhatsApp click data. Not in Performance, not in Links, not anywhere. It’s not a settings issue on your end — Search Console simply doesn’t track what happens once someone leaves Google’s ecosystem, and a WhatsApp chat opening is exactly that: an off-platform action.
The good news is that seeing every single WhatsApp click, broken down by page, campaign, and even traffic source, takes about ten minutes to set up properly. You just need the right tool.
Why Search Console Can’t Do This (And Never Will)
Search Console’s entire dataset is built from one relationship: Google Search query → your page. Clicks, impressions, and average position all describe that one step. Once a visitor is on your page and clicks something — a button, a link, a WhatsApp icon — that action happens inside your website, which is Google Analytics territory, not Google Search territory. No future update changes this; it’s the fundamental boundary between the two products.
The Setup That Actually Works
Step 1 — Connect Google Tag Manager to your site, if it isn’t already. This is the layer that watches for clicks and passes them to GA4.
Step 2 — Create an outbound click trigger scoped to wa.me and api.whatsapp.com. In GTM, this is a “Click URL” trigger set to “contains” either domain.
Step 3 — Build a GA4 event tag that fires on that trigger, named something clear like whatsapp_click. Pass through the page path and, if you’re tagging links with UTM parameters, the campaign source as an event parameter.
Step 4 — Publish the container and test it. Click your own WhatsApp button, then check GA4’s Realtime report — you should see the event appear within seconds.
Step 5 — Build a simple GA4 report or exploration filtered to whatsapp_click, broken down by page and source. This becomes your actual “WhatsApp clicks” dashboard.
What You Get That Search Console Never Could
Once this is live, you can answer questions Search Console was never able to touch: which landing page drives the most WhatsApp opens, whether your Instagram bio link or your blog post converts better, and how click volume trends week over week. Layer Search Console’s query data on top — which search terms brought people to that page in the first place — and you’ve got the full funnel, organic query to actual chat click, in two tools working together instead of one tool being asked to do a job it was never built for.
Setting this up once is easy. Keeping it accurate across every new landing page, every campaign, and every WhatsApp number your business adds is the part that tends to slip — which is exactly the kind of ongoing tracking hygiene we handle for clients at Maya Digital Desk alongside their SEO and paid campaigns. If you want this running correctly without becoming another thing on your own to-do list, that’s a conversation worth having.
